Sengstack's Video Shooting Tips

1. List and describe two things you already knew.
-Get wide and tight shots: to get tighter shots, don't use the zoom, actually get closer to the object.
-Find unusual angles: get some shots at high and low angles

2. List and describe two things you learned for the first time.
-Lean forward and backward: instead of using zoom in or out, move closer and then lean back.
-Get an establishing shot: it sets the scene for the story in one or a few sequence shots.

Opening Activity 9/26/11

Topic: Two American hikers freed after two years in Iran captivity.

Angle: Hikers freed from prison.

Criteria: Unusualness, timeliness

If I were to make this a broadcast journalism piece I would show clips of the two hikers being released from prison and maybe a little from there first days of freedom after.  I would also like to know what it was like in prison and record them giving a speech about the past two years.

Opening Activity "The Boys of Winter" 9/23/11

Bob Dotson's stand up is toward the beginning in the middle when he is in the stands with the fans.  He says the best spot to do a stand up is in the main body of the story because it gives the viewers information you can't visualize.  You should have 3-5 key points in the middle of your story. I believe the key points in "The Boys of Winter" are there age, the guys today, George Bakewell's life (just married, excersising still), and baseball back in the day.

Opening Activity 9/22/11

Summary:  Facebok has changed once again! This last Tuesday it made some dramatic changes that had users confused and mad.  Instead of recent updates its now only top news and you can share your status with groups of people now instead of everyone.  This was a Google+ concept that Facebook was lacking. Facebook has over 750 million users so they think they can change everything, but that also causes loss in users.

Response: I believe Facebook is competing with Google+ since it's the new competition in the social network. I think they are trying not to take the same route as MySpace and then let Google+ be the new Facebook.  I, for one, am very confused with these changes and it makes it very confusing.  I thnk Facebook is trying to change to many things at once, it's like every time you go on to Facebook, there is something new or changed.  No one really had a problem with it before so i don't get why they are changing everything.  The website changes everytime you get used to a change.

Opening Activity 9/21/11

Brazil's economy is booming at the moment so they are giving 75,000 scholarships away to the bast colleges in the country.  I think its good for everyone around the world to be able to attend the top universities out there.  It's only available to Brazilians studying subjects of strategic national importance though which is limited for most people.  I also feel like Brazil is trying to show the US how much better there economy is compared to ours at the moment.

Opening Activity 9/19/11

I think Target should have been more prepared ahead of time when putting a new big designer's stuff for sale on Target especially when it's for a limited time only.  They advertised a lot to let everyone know about the designer but were not ready when everyone started ordering stuff online and were waiting outside of the store for hours before it opened.  One lady said she was so upset she is never going to shop from Target again.  I would be mad and dissapointed, too, if i orded a whole bunch of things and my order got canceled or delayed, but that doesn't mean im never shopping at Target again.

Opening Activity 9/20/11 Ruby Bridges

Ruby Bridges was the first black student to attend school at William Frantz Public School in New Orleans that had all-white students.  When she went to school that first day, no one was there because all the kids parents took them home and people threw stuff at her as she walked up the school steps.  At the time Ruby just thought she was early but it was because of her color. Ruby Bridges was born in 1954 and grew up in the 1960s. Ruby Bridges was the first African American student to attend any all-white school in the South (not just William Frantz Public School) for the integration of the public school system in New Orleans.

Opening Activity 9/16/11

Mitchell Johnson, 13, and Andrew Golden, 11, asked to be excused from class one day in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Andrew Goldon went to pull the fire alarm and then went to go meet Mitchell outside in the woods.  When all the teachers and students started to come out of the building they both opened fire.  Together they killed 4 students and a teacher, plus injuring 10 other students.  They were held imprisoned untill they turned 21, and now have no criminal record.

Mitchell Johnson, 13, and Andrew Golden, 11, killed five people on March 24, 1998 in Jonesboro, Arkansas.  They were raised around guns and both were part of gun clubs and competitions.

I would do an angle from one of the students that was evacuating the school when the kids opened fire, that also knew the two boys.  So other people can see what it was like recognizing the shooters and what the experience felt like.

Opening Assignment 9/15/11

5 years ago, a cat named Willow ran away from the Squires family during a home renovation project.  Who would have known that Willow would be found at an Animal Shelter in Manhattan, New York.  The cat was in good condition when it was brought to the shelter, so someone must have been taking care of it.  The cat will soon be reunited with the Squires family.  I think it is pretty amazing for an animal, epecially a cat, to get from Colorado to New York and be in healthy condition 5 years later.  I would have just assumed that the cat died after a year of not finding it, but finding it 5 years later, healthy, in a different state would make me think that anything is possible and don't ever give up.

Opening Activity 9/14/11

A baby girl was found in the Mississippi River wrapped in plastic bags and a t-shirt, put inside of a canvas bag.  In the bag there were 4 statues and a piece of jewelry.  They still haven't found the mother yet and are hoping to get some leads.  To me, no matter who did it, no one deserves to lose a life like that.  Even though the girl was only a few days old, she could have had an amazing life.  All newborns are a lot of work, but if it is too much to handle, I would at least just give her to the hospital with no questions asked so the kid at least has a chance.  I can't beleive that this is the fourth infant found in the Mississippi especially when there is a law that can help. I hope something is done about this, because no one deserves to die at a young age.

Opening Activity 9/13/11

Is Google+ going to be the new Facebook? In my opinion no because even though Google is now offering games, Facebok still has more to offer and I think it is organized on Facebook better so it is easier for its users.  I don't think enough people know about what all Google has, so Facebook will continue to be the top social network.  I think if Google+ is too similar to Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace it isn't going to do that well. If it has something unique about it though and is simple to use, who knows it could turn out to be the new Facebook.

Opening Activity 9/12/11

The 9-11 Memorial opens today to the puplic after one decade since the terror attack brought down the twin towers.  It was open yesterday to the victims' family and people attending the service.  Family members say they can go see there loved ones now and that they are home.  There are over 3,000 names on the memorial, the people who were killed on September 11th and the names of the people who died from the attack on 1993.  People say when they look at the two fountains, it gives them chills.  Also, around the memorial there are 400 trees, and all but one are new.  A "Survivor Tree" was found in the ruins after the attack that changed our country forever.

Bayza Weeks was pregnant with her son Darryl Atkis Jr when she was only a freshman at DeLaSalle Catholic High School in Minneapolis.  She was afraid she would have to drop out of school and have an abortion, but her school believed in her.  DeLaSalle believes in life and education, so Bayza made it and graduated from DeLaSalle High School in 1998.  After High School, she went to school to earn her bachelor's and master's degrees while raising Darryl and being a surrogate to five others. Now her son is a 6 foot 1 inch freshman attending DeLaSalle and Bayza Weeks is now the dean at DeLaSalle High School.

"Everybody Has A Story"

Janet Aragon is a senior this year at Eastview.  She was born here in Minnesota and her birthday is February 10th.  She's kind of quiet, but once you get to know her, she is the total opposite.  She hasn't gotten her permit yet but will be very soon.  One of the worst days of her life was when her grandma passed away and she missed a week of school.  In the future she wants to get a tattoo of stars on her wrist.
