Opening Activity 9/20/11 Ruby Bridges
Ruby Bridges was the first black student to attend school at William Frantz Public School in New Orleans that had all-white students. When she went to school that first day, no one was there because all the kids parents took them home and people threw stuff at her as she walked up the school steps. At the time Ruby just thought she was early but it was because of her color. Ruby Bridges was born in 1954 and grew up in the 1960s. Ruby Bridges was the first African American student to attend any all-white school in the South (not just William Frantz Public School) for the integration of the public school system in New Orleans.
